Abdirahman M.Abdullahi

The current Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia is Mr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, who was first appointed in April 2019 and reappointed for a second four-year term in July 2023. He brings over two decades of professional experience in finance and economic policy, having previously served as a Senior Economic Policy Advisor to the Office of the Prime Minister of Somalia. Governor Abdirahman holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Norwegian University of Technology and Science and a Master’s degree in Finance and International Banking from Liverpool John Moores University.

Since assuming office, he has played a key role in strengthening Somalia’s financial system, leading the modernization of the Central Bank, and rebuilding public trust in the financial sector. His notable achievements include launching the Somali National QR Code Standard (SOMQR) to promote digital payments, reintroducing Somalia into global financial systems such as Global Payments Week after a 32-year absence, and enforcing the use of the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) in the country’s banking sector. Governor Abdirahman is also overseeing efforts to issue a new national currency and combat widespread counterfeiting—an essential step given that Somalia has not printed new currency notes since the early 1990s. His leadership reflects a strong commitment to financial sector reform, digital transformation, and macroeconomic stability.
